We are kicking off the series with a celebration of the upcoming 50th anniversary year of Title IX. June 23, 2022 will mark 50 years since the passing of the Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title IX protects individuals from discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.[1]
Several organizations have promised to celebrate Title IX in the upcoming months. For example, the U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Title IX with the release of four new Forever stamps, which feature a runner, swimmer, gymnast, and soccer player.[2] CBS Sports’ “We Need to Talk” has launched a year-long project into the growth of women’s sports.[3]
Higher education institutions and K-12 schools may want to commemorate the monumental anniversary. Here are some celebration ideas:
- Host a speaker event about the wins and losses throughout the history of Title IX.
- Create a page on your website dedicated to Title IX history and include historical photos. from your institution implementing Title IX.
- Provide lunch to your Title IX stakeholders and team members on June 23, 2022.
- Hand out swag to students and community members commemorating Title IX.
- Host a Title IX film series with discussion about issues.
- Host a Title IX book club with discussion about issues.
- Create lesson plans based on sexual assault, sexual harassment, athletics, disability accommodation, or gender equity.
